THE PTERRY THANK YOU PROJECT

So, thanks to overwhelming response, I'm happy to announce the creation of:

---------------------------------------------------------------

THE PTERRY THANK YOU PROJECT

A collection of fans' thank yous for Terry Pratchett

This is to be a FUN, UPLIFTING collection of drawings, thank yous and prose to thank Mr. Pratchett for his wonderful writing and influence on our lives. They say laughter is the best medicine- as Discworld has shown us multiple times- and we want to give PTerry the best medicine we can. All the submissions will be printed into a booklet.

Submissions can be made to pterrythankyouproject AT gmail.com until January 15th.
We'll be glad to take art, essays and thank yous. Please, nothing too vulgar- we want to heal, not give him a heart attack!

Also, we've had such a great response, I'd love to have a friendly competition for the cover of the Thank You Book- If you are interested in submitting a cover, please place COVER ART in the title of your email.

No fanfiction please, and the entire thing will most likely be printed on 8.5x11- so art should be at least 300 dpi (and no bigger than 8 by 10inches).
---------------------------------------------------------------

I'll keep everyone updated on how we're doing- if anyone wants to volunteer as beta readers and editors, lemme know.

Also, if people want to suggest a title for the booklet in the comments, please do!

Title Suggestion....

What about a joke along the lines of Granny Weatherwax's I'm-out-borrowing" card?

You aten't dead!

Re: Title Suggestion....

*seconds!*

It seems crass but I think it would be right up his alley.

I'm pants at art, so I can only offer my most-beloved Disc-related phrase. Maybe someone wants to make a nice drawing to go with it...

That may need to be a userpic. Very profound.

I suck at drawing, but I'll try something anyway. :D

You can always just write something :)

I'm willing to beta/edit.

Unfortunately, my art isn't the kind that'll fit in a book. ...wait, unless I take a picture of it- that could work! I'll have to get started on sculpting something. :D

Anyone know how PTerry feels about fanfic? I wrote a crossover with Death and my other major fandom, Starsky and Hutch, which has Starsky playing chess with death for Hutch's life. Think that would be appropriate? If people want to see, it's here: Starsky Enforces His Law

I'm under the impression Terry's ok with fanfiction as long as he doesn't see it (ie deal with it directly). So I'd have to say no to including any fanfic in the project.

That's a wonderful idea! It's really amazing that so many DW fans care about Pterry as a person, not just as 'the guy who wrote those books I like'.

I will try my best to send something in! Is there any specific format you want?

-- And, oh; if you need someone else, I'm willing to beta/edit/spellcheck.

I'm going to see what I can do with an essay or some art. Remember, write in your own style. The last thing he needs is 50 essays aping his writing style.

Great idea! Will do my best to write something to include.

I'd be really happy to proofread things, and I'll try and draw something.

For those submitting art, could you give us the approximate size of the booklet, and the minimum resolution (dpi) for the art?

[info]jesidres

December 14 2007, 12:56:44 UTC 4 years ago

Minimum resolution should be 300 dpi, and it's going to be letter sized 8x10 is the maximum size before stuff may get trimmed/shrunk).

I'm also happy to edit/beta/whatever. And I'll try to get off my butt and write something once I've finished stressing my ears off about my audition tonight. Probably tomorrow. :D

If you get enough submissions, it might be an idea to get it properly published via lulu.com or something similar. Make a pretty hardback book :)

I would submit something, but I have no talent whatsoever. But if you need any help with proofreading or admin, I'm happy to help.

[info]jesidres

December 14 2007, 12:58:48 UTC 4 years ago

I think just a thank you letter will still be an amazing contribution.

I shy away from Lulu because we do not have permission to use his characters. But, I was planning on getting it bound at my local kinko's....

I just read about the Alzheimer's yesterday and I was thinking what a great idea it would be if some enterprising fans got together and made him a book (after all the wonderful ones he's done for us) which might help cheer him up. Awesome idea! :)

I will definitely contribute, maybe just a really nice letter, and I would be extremely glad to help proof-read, edit, compile etc. You can drop me an e-mail at anatwork.kay@gmail.com.

By the way, I completely second azikale's suggestion about having the submissions printed up into a nice hardcover book. I'm sure we could all arrange a contribution or something for it.

It might also be worth publicizing this on afp (alt.fan.pratchett) through google groups. You will probably get some people from there who would like to contribute.

The only thing about that is that Terry has been known to show up on the newsgroups (at least a.b.p., anyway - not sure about a.f.p.), so he could possibly find out about the project before it's been started, or at least completed. And while I have a feeling he'd be very touched upon receiving it, he'd probably feel self-conscious and uncomfortable knowing it's being planned, and might very well discourage it (not to mention I assume it's meant to be a surprise in any case). :)

I definetly second spreading the word as much as possible, though!

THANK YOU for doing this. I knew someone much more clever and orginized than I would get something going.

I'll beta read, if you need me.

I am totally in (if I can manage to finish something in time). Thanks so much for organizing this.

And I'm sure you have enough volunteers, but just in case, I'm willing to beta/edit as well. :)

Right. I think I should do something interesting. I have made a woodcut, like I said, of Adora Belle, which is, I can say, pretty unique (I think I only made about 10 prints). But I'll get some pencils and other media out too :)

METRIC LULZ

For those of you living in the metric system; 8 by 10 inches equals 20.3 by 25.4 cm. :)
